From the clip below we can see that the worker, an American, was working at a munitions factory at the time of the war. She was given a production assignment, to turn 100 pounds of steel into a machine gun, and despite the dangers the war posed she and her colleagues completed the task. The manufacturing of such weapons was necessary to the war effort and the factory made almost 60,000 of them. The woman seen in the doodle is wearing one of the highly sought after Liberty headscarves which was a symbol of free expression in the US at the time. The war was an opportunity for the Government to limit the free expression of the American people. Although she may have been an American in name, the implications of the Nazi regimes “blood and soil” ideas meant that she would have felt more at home in England. The clip below shows her in action. In it, she is working with a production line and appears to be making progress. The article she is in is titled “Fruit Worker by Day, Guns by Night” and appears to be a Daily Worker newspaper. The Daily Worker was an American Communist Party newspaper which advocated for the rights of women and minorities.
